Located in the picturesque village of Beer in East Devon, we produce high specification, technically superior model railway track, plastic kits, and accessories for the model railway hobby at our two manufacturing sites at Beer and Buckfastleigh. We also publish the UK’s best-selling model railway magazine, the Railway Modeller. Alongside the factory and head office in Beer is our tourism site Pecorama. Opened in 1975 Pecorama is one of Devon’s leading tourist attractions, welcoming over 25,000 visitors a season.  Pecorama has award winning gardens, stunning sea views and Britain’s finest 7.25 inch railway, where a fleet of steam locomotives pull passenger-carrying trains on a mile long route through the grounds, over bridges, through steep-sided cuttings and a long, dark tunnel.

GENERAL ASSISTANT - Seasonal

A bit about the role

 

A General Assistant is a key role in our Pecorama Tourism site. Ensuring every visitor has a fantastic day, this is a busy customer facing role welcoming our customers and serving in our ticket office or food outlets.

Your responsibilities will include:           

  • Welcoming visitors to the site
  • Selling tickets and merchandise in our shop
  • Operating the till and cash handling
  • Taking and serving food and drink orders
  • Catering support including basic food and drink preparation
  • Cleaning the kitchen, food prep and serving areas
  • Clearing tables
  • Putting away stock and deliveries

RAILWAY ASSISTANT

A bit about the role

This role is a diverse and varied role, siting within the Beer Heights Light Railway (BHLR) team and reporting to the Chief Mechanical Engineer. You will be involved in every aspect of the railway operation, from maintenance of the track, to driving, to ensuring visitors alight safety at the station.

Your responsibilities will include:           

  • Basic maintenance of locomotives, rolling stock and infrastructure
  • Machining, fabrication, welding, fitting works
  • After training, driving of steam and diesel locomotives
  • Routine maintenance and checks around the BHLR railway
  • Manning the Station

A bit about you

We are looking for someone with hands-on practical and engineering skills, who likes variety, working both behind the scenes in the workshop and with visitors, driving our trains or at the station.  With a passion for miniature railways, you will need a can-do attitude and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Personal Specification: 

  • A team player with good communication skills
  • Experience in mechanical engineering
  • Mechanical engineering qualification desirable but not essential
  • Have an understanding and experience of steam locomotives and internal combustion engines
  • Ability to work from technical drawings
  • An understanding of the importance of and passion to deliver health and safety standards
  • Full UK driving licence is essential
  • Basic computer skills – word and excel

Working hours: 39 hours per week, working Monday-Friday during the winter and then Tuesday-Saturday in the season.

STATION ROLE - Seasonal

A bit about the role 

A key Role in our Tourism site, ensuring every visitor has a fantastic day. This is a busy customer facing role serving in either our ticket office or on the station at Much Natter.

Role responsibilities will include:

  • Safe operation of Much Natter station
  • Serving customers in the Beer Heights Light Railway Ticket Office
  • Safely loading and unloading passengers from the trains
  • Providing an excellent customer experience
  • Working as part of a team coving the ticket office
  • Ensuring the ticket office and station as clean and tidy
  • Keeping the ticket office well stocked
  • Use of the till and scanner for memberships

A bit about you

We are looking for someone who is passionate about steam railways and operations, a high-quality customer service, always has a smile. This role is an active one so someone who likes to be busy and on the go.
